The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
