The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders maintain how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur stated via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
