The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and over 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
