Taliban Employed Discarded British Technology to Locate Afghans That Served With Western Troops, Inquiry Learns
A confidential source has revealed a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind sensitive technology enabling Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans who worked with western forces.
Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger
Person A, identified as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the security lapse were told to change residences and alter their mobile numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.
Lawmakers are currently examining the UK government's handling of a massive disclosure of private information involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to come to Britain to flee the regime.
How the Leak Occurred
A spreadsheet with confidential details, comprising names, contact details and occasionally household data, was inadvertently disclosed by an official working at special operations center in February 2022.
The breach was discovered months later, when identities of nine people who had applied to relocate to Britain appeared on online platforms.

Impact of the Information Leak
Early investigations submitted to the committee indicated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and co-workers of people concerned by the leak had been killed.
A superinjunction concerning the incident was put in force in last year and blocked any information concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with informed individuals at risk they were working with that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

The source explained horrific treatment experienced by concerned people, involving electrocution, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.
