Our Dominik Diamond Unofficial Gaming of the Year List for 2025
Alright, how did you experience the past year in your family? Was it all as good as you pretended on social media? Full of academic success for the kids and elaborate costume celebrations for the parents? Or perhaps it was a swamp of disappointment with only occasional entertaining flotsam? And was any of it genuine, or is everyone now seven-fingered synthetic personas with perfect smiles?
I have gathered the family for a chat, willing or unwilling, to discuss the paramount thing in any given year: which video games we played the most. So here goes:
Title First Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He took umbrage that the question was posed. I respect that.
Title Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her avatar has a successful utopia with significantly better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Release the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Title I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he complains, I reply that I am behaving this way to prepare him so he can mature and play games for mature audiences. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is incredible. Superior than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted card game competitive game, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a iconic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just lacked the focused attention to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after evening drinks.
Game That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was a late adopter. And it is incredible. It just gets absolutely everything right. The core concept is a wonderful concept, but the effects behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I would happily play at any hour. Add in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an definite peak of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I wrote about how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I mention that in the exact way, because I respect the passion, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a bastard-hard exploration-focused thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I understand that it has great art and is perfection if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when many games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Toss-up between business deals that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
