Israelis commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire talks proceed
People have come together throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative stated the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid provision
- Post-war management of the region
Civilian Reaction
In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will have peace of mind."
"After we see everybody home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant explained: "We must do any agreement needed for the hostages to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Research now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to finish in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.

"Once the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me all night."
"Every second we look at the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of six people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area said two more victims had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south region, medics reported.
