Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
