Our team is verifying images and video shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
