Authorities stated they could not remove the eyes without harming the artwork.

A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after reportedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a mythical creature by applying googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, aged 19, appeared remotely at the local court in the state of South Australia on that day, charged with a single charge of damaging property.

Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the local council explained that CCTV footage captured a individual putting fake eyes on the sculpture, which locals have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and told the judge she was unwell, as reported by news outlets, with the judge recommending her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in December.

Art piece after eye removal
The affected sculpture following the googly eyes were taken off.

The following day the reported event, the local mayor said that restoration to the popular public artwork would be costly as the adhesive eyes were impossible to be removed without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have embraced Cast in Blue.”

The mayor said the local government would seek the “significant” repair costs from those accountable for the vandalism.

At the time the artwork was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and design.

Priced at A$136,000 (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the artwork depicts a mythical megafauna, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an ancient anteater-like marsupial found in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.

Official name vs. nickname
The sculpture is its formal title but locals nicknamed the artwork the ‘Blue Blob’.
