2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Reception

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.

Recently, 2K president a key figure informed employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

This announcement follows a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the full content from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a sharper identity.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our fans.

The trust in this project increases every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.

Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having dedicated the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in greeting him next week. We are all excited to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to come.

David

Background of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Vision

Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 alongside a early access event. At the time, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Take on the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and tests that shift every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, gamble everything, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is in your hands."

The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or platforms, but fans can anticipate further news as production progresses.
